The Real age of the Universe

Posted by NeonFlame126 Apr. 10, 2009 @ 12:52 PM EDT

As I lay in my bed last night I figured out that the Universe is not 14 billion years old. We thought so because we can only see 14 billion light years away from Earth, meaning that there are only things - to our knowledge - up to 14 billion years old. That doesn't mean that the Universe is 14 billion years old, it just means that we can only see what was - let's say made - within 14 billion years of our 'Creation'.

To find out the exact age of the Universe we would need to find the origin point. I have an idea how to find it, but no exact instructions.

- Find age of Solar system
- Guesstimate age of the gases used to form it.
- Guesstimate how long it would've take them to get to where they were.
- Assume that the calculation was from the origin point.
- If you think you've found the OP
- Find distance between Earth and OP
- multiply by two
- add to distance we can see beyond OP

EX:
OP is 4 Billion light years away
We can see 10 Billion years beyond that
2(4) + 10 = Age of our Universe
8 + 10 = A.o.U.
18 = The age of our Universe.

I find studying things like this to be the most interesting subject.

I've always found astronomy to be the most interesting, fun, and fulfilling use of my studies.

Well that sounds all sciency lol but the problem is the universe doesn't run on time like we do.. when you think about it time doesn't really exist it was created by us cause we see the sun come up and go down and made it easier for ourselfs by saying that was a day. our year is comprised of the earth travleing around the sun once... so if you think about it time doesn't exist, it is a human creation.

I don't think the universe has an age, its just a black void which loops, has no end, has no gravity, has nothing. just gas and elements which eventually forms planets, now that planet could be said to have an age because we could messure it with numbers, but the universe doesn't have an age.
there was no big bang, its just the best theory that we have so far. The universe is eternal and won't ever colapse. it just stays there, never moving never changing containing EVERYTHING.

lol thats my theory anyway =)

I don't think this will work. for instance, how would you estimate how long it would take for the gases to get where they are without knowing the origin in the first place? who even says there is an origin point?

May. 2, 2009 | 8:17 PM NeonFlame126 responds:

Everything starts somewhere.

hmm, this is tough! Trust a 14 year old on the age of the universe while he spent a couple minutes thinking about it in bed? Or extremely intelligent scientists who spent years trying to figure this out, not just a couple minutes in bed.

Hard to choose... lol

May. 14, 2009 | 2:49 PM NeonFlame126 responds:

lol, I was just saying that it sounded REALLY FUCKING DUMB. I still think I've got it right here until a professional scientist proves me otherwise.

If it means anything, My science teacher agrees with me.

Also, Einstein had a eureka moment about Relativity while daydreaming.
